What it needs
Heat stress
Above a heat-and-humidity index of 75, expect the animals to go off feed and production to drop.
Soil
Not soil dependent. Needs solid, cleanable housing with shade and a wallow or sprinkler — pigs cannot sweat.
Feed and water
Feed is almost the whole cost. They convert kitchen and crop waste well, but a pig grown on scraps alone grows slowly, and water must never run out.

Watch for
Common problems
African swine fever
- What you will see
- High fever, reddened skin, huddling, and deaths across the pen within days.
- What to do
- No vaccine and no treatment. Survival depends entirely on keeping it out: no swill from unknown meat, no visitors into the pens, and no new pigs without quarantine. Report suspected cases immediately.
Internal parasites
- What you will see
- Poor growth despite feed, rough coat, coughing.
- What to do
- Deworm on veterinary advice, keep floors clean and dry, and do not let pens stay muddy.
Heat stress

- Panting, animals off feed in the afternoon, sows failing to conceive.
- What to do
- Shade, a wallow or sprinkler, and feeding in the cool of the day. Pigs have almost no sweat glands.
Follow the label for doses, and ask an extension officer or vet before using a chemical you have not used before.
